“BIGHORN In-the-Rut” Field Trip ~ Sat. 11/22/08

by ecc

Join us for an exciting opportunity to view and photograph BIGHORN SHEEP during breeding season.
Of the approximately 8,000 in our various mtn areas, we are fortunate to have the second largest concentration in our own backyard. A/K/A the ‘Georgetown Herd’, they can often be seen in areas along US-6, I-70, and US-40.

Our guide for this adventure will be Tom Nelson, ECC member whose background has enabled him to become very familiar with the behavior and habitat of these sheep. A Life Member of the ‘Rocky Mtn Bighorn Society’, long-time volunteer with the ‘CO Division of Wildlife’ – as a big game hunter, as well as part-time seasonal employee with the ‘Division of Wildlife’, Tom has been privy to the tracking data of collared animals and will be scouting locations for our best opportunities to view.

Meeting time: 7 AM ~ at Java Mountain Roasters, located at 1510 Miner Strret in Idaho Springs.
Exit I-70 at Mt Evans/Hwy 103. Turn right onto Miner Street, and go 2 blks east. Located on north side of street.
They open at 6:30 AM… and will have extra coffee brewing for us!
Tom will prepare a map of the planned route, and have copies available when we meet for coffee. Expect to leave the coffee shop by 7:30.

Dress in layers for cold weather ~ hats, gloves, warm shoes or boots. Don’t forget the camera! Tripods and your longest lenses, a best bet. Any questions – pls email Tom at tom10@wispertel.net or phone him at (303)526-9138. See y’all on Saturday!!
