EVERGREEN CAMERA CLUB DISPLAY AT EVERGREEN LIBRARY IN OCTOBER

by ecc

The Evergreen Camera Club has the exhibition wall in the Evergreen Library reserved for displaying our photographs in the month of October. This is a large space, and can easily hold 60-100 photos, depending on size and arrangement, so there is room for EVERYONE to show some of their work. Nearly everyone in the club has taken some photos good enough to exhibit, so don’t think yours are not good enough. Just pick your best, and/or most interesting. Any subject (suitable for viewing in a public library, that is) is fine. We will have no theme.

Photos can be in frames, or mounted on foam board, or whatever. They need not all be mounted the same. The main wall is fabric-covered wood, and nails can be driven into it to hang framed photos with hanging wire. Foam board, or Crescent board or what have you, mounts can be hung by putting small bits of Velcro (the “hook” part) on the corners of the board and attaching it directly to the fabric, which holds Vecro nicely. There is also a brick wall opposite the fabric wall. There is a wood strip high on that wall from which wire holders can be lowered to hang framed photos. The library has a supply of such hangers.

Captions should identify the photographer, and can also identify the subject of the photo if you want. Some photos need an explanatory note, others do not. That’s up to you. Captions can be put on a small card and attached under the photo by taping it to the back, or mounted separately on the wall with a little piece of Velcro. No commercial advertising is allowed. You could use business cards to ID yourselves, but they cannot refer to your photography business if you have one.

Size can vary. Many photos need to be 8×10 or larger to show well. They can be much larger if you prefer. Depending on the subject and how much they grab attention via color or contrast, some could be smaller. Occasionally a 5×7 or maybe a panoramic view, say 4×11, would work.

Please do make it look reasonably professional. Last time we had a few board-mounted photos with mats taped around them as borders, and after a few days the tape loosened and the mats fell off. That did not look good. Just take a little pride in your work, and remember that it will be viewed by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people.

The object is to hang pictures on the first day of the month and take them down on the last day. The librarians want us to go in at least an hour before the library opens to the public and hang our work before the public comes in so we won’t block the hallway. They would prefer that only two or three of us come to do that to minimize confusion as to who is authorized, etc. So, we need to get all photos to a couple of designated people prior to October 1, and let the library know who those designated people are.

When you bring your work, it must be ready to hang, which means either framed with hanging wire, or board-mounted with Velcro. Walmart and Staples have cheap Velcro, and the industrial size works best.

The best way would be for people to bring their photos to our meetings in September and give it to whoever is designated to hang it at the library. If you have something at the last minute, you would have to bring it to one of the designees, before October 1.

WHO WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP HANG PHOTOS ON OCTOBER 1? It’s not hard if they are ready to hang.
