ANDY LONG WILL PRESENT A PROGRAM ABOUT BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY
Andy Long is an award-winning photographer / writer who devotes his photography work to the beauty of the world around us. As a leader of workshops since 1994, Andy likes to help people explore new areas and to go home with a memorable experience as well as great images in addition to having learned a good bit about photography. As a professional photographer since 1982, Andy tries to emphasize a unique eye in capturing images of our world and to pass this on to those who go on his workshops.

With more than 300,000 stock images, work has appeared in more than 40 publications and books as well as in National Geographic and Animal Planet television shows. Among the places his work has appeared in are Birder’s World, Outdoor Life, View (Germany), Colorado Outdoors, Alaska Magazine, Audubon field guides, National Wildlife Federation note cards, Texas Parks & Wildlife, regional AAA magazines, Montana Magazine, Montana Outdoors, Outdoor Photographer, Outdoor and Nature Photographer and in ads for Audubon and Rollei cameras.

He has been a winner in the Audubon Top 100 Images of the Year, Audubon Share the View contest (4 images) and the Nature’s Best Wilderness Forever Photo Competition and is a previous winner of the national RoseWater Network Photographer of the Year award. Andy’s work is currently represented by the following stock agencies – Alamy, Imagefinders, AKM and PhotoAgora.

As a writer, articles appear in every issue of Nature Photographer magazine, of which he’s an assistant editor and featured columnist. Many articles can be found at www.apogeephoto.com, where he has been a featured writer for 15 years. In addition to this work, he presented programs around the country as part of the Nature First Photography Seminars sponsored by Nature Photographer magazine. He also has been a featured speaker at the Colorado Photography Festival and the New England Camera Club Council Annual Conference.

His strength in the field is with being able to find and point out the best composition possible with his strong photographic eye. He tries to show people what he sees and hopes to get them to understand what makes it a strong composition. There are four key elements to look for in doing this – light, subject, background, and conditions. When all four are evident a great image is easy but this is not always the case. If only two or three are present, work has to be done to create a great image and this is where Andy helps bring out the best from the scene that is in front of our eyes.

Andy started his career as a sports writer and photographer, which helped with the transition to wildlife photography with being able to anticipate action and get the right shot – especially as he started out in the days of manual focus. Among his sports writing jobs was with the Jackson Hole Guide, which opened his eyes to the world of wildlife, nature and landscape photography. Several moves later he was back in Florida still doing sports but the great outdoors was calling and a move to Colorado ensued and is still his base.

Like many outdoor photographers, Andy drew a lot of inspiration from the work of the master – Ansel Adams. One quote of Adams’ has held true for him for quite a long time: “Sometimes I arrive just when God’s ready to have someone click the shutter.”
