SHOOTING IN THE PLAINS

Jim Griggs will be passing through Colorado from Kansas and has agreed to stop in Evergreen to present “Shooting in the Plains” on Wednesday, May 25th for ECC at 7:00 pm at Evergreen Fire & Rescue. This is an excellent time to focus east and learn about photo opportunities in the plains.
From his first 35mm camera back in 1965, Jim knew he had found his passion. He worked in a newspaper darkroom after college and studied under magazine and assignment photographer, Bob Smith. He later worked for a studio in Texas as a commercial, portrait and wedding photographer under the guidance of Allen Crenshaw, one of the best in North Texas.

In 1984, Jim attended a workshop by world-renowned photographer, Boyd Norton. They hit it off well and later that month Boyd hired Jim to be an instructor for Wilderness Photography Workshops. The two have led workshops in Colorado and Wyoming ever since.

In 1998, Jim took the reigns of the year-old Great Plains Nature Photographers and over the years has brought in well-known photographers/speakers such as George Lepp, Art Wolfe, Rick Sammon, Joel Sartore, Michael Forsberg and many others. “Leading this group has been a very rewarding experience,” Jim explained, “It is part of my commitment to teaching and training photographers.” Jim also was assignment assistant to National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson while shooting the Tallgrass Prairies of Kansas.

Jim’s photography has been published in many calendars, books, magazines, websites, billboards, dioramas and displays including National Geographic, Africa Geographic, Wyoming Wildlife, Kiplinger’s, The Sierra Club, Backroads of Colorado, Extreme Golf, and more. He also leads photography trips to Tanzania in East Africa, the wilds of Peru, and Galapagos Islands.
