May 2024: Join us at Bisti Badlands/De-na-zin Wilderness

by Tina Disorbio

The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is a 45,000-acre wilderness area located in San Juan County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. There are a few of us from the camera club that are planning to go to shoot hoodoos and welcome anyone else interested to join us there.

We’ll provide a list of who is going for possible carpooling.

DATE: May 30th to June 4th (or whenever the individuals want to leave)

LOCATION: Bisti Badlands/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is located about 30 miles south of Farmington, NM
Aztec Ruins National Monument is located in Aztec, New Mexico and is about 10 miles northeast of Farmington. I plan on stopping there for about an hour, on the way to Farmington.

HOTEL: Stay in Farmington, New Mexico. Best Western Inn + 4 Corners Inn, Farmington NM, 855-516-1090

ATTRACTION: Hoodoos, search “Bisti Badlands” for info & videos. The last person informed me that he was there shooting for a week and did not see any snakes or lizards.

OUR PLAN: We plan to leave early morning on the 30th, stop at Aztec Ruins on the way, and stay in Farmington. Leave early the next morning after an early breakfast, to arrive at the 2nd (7 miles past the 1st entrance) west entrance in time for some good morning light. In that there are no trails and easy to get lost, it is recommended to have a GPS or a compass. There is also an east entrance which has more dramatic hoodoos which I plan on seeing toward the end of the trip. Also, just south of Bisti is Chaco Cultural Historic Park for those who want to spend additional days in the area.

DRESS: There are thistles in the are so high hiking boots are recommended, backpack with plenty of water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray.

DESCRIPTION: Wilderness area, plenty of hiking, no trails. Suggest bringing wide angle to short telephoto lens to capture the hoodoos.

RSVP: Required to join our group – please send an email to RSVP@evergreencameraclub.com to reserve your spot or if you have questions.
